You quickly feed Saddiq the ball, and he puts up the shot.

The world moves in slow motion. The ball arcs high. You hold your breath. The ball hits the front of the rim, bounces back, ricochets off the backboard, and drops through the hoop.

BZZZZZZTTT!

Time expires, and Saddiq’s three-pointer wins the game!

The ref’s whistle stops the celebration short.

“What’s going on?” you ask.

The ref points at Saddiq’s left foot. His toe is over the three-point line. “On the line,” the ref explains. “Sorry, but the shot only counts for two points, not three.”

Your heart sinks. There’s confusion in the stands as Tigers fans try to figure out what’s happening. But then the referee makes it clear by blowing his whistle again and shouting, “Overtime!”

Coach Willis huddles you together. “OK, guys,” he says. He has to talk loud to be heard over the crowd. The whole gym must be able to feel that the curse could end today, as they’re cheering louder than ever. “Take a deep breath and relax. You’re tired, I get that. But now’s the time to dig down and find that extra bit of strength.”

“Let’s go, Tigers!” you shout.

“Tigers… ROAR!” the whole team replies.

You take the court, glancing at your teammates. They may sound fired up, but they look exhausted. Fortunately, the Vipers look the same.

The Vipers get the tip-off, and Miles takes the ball down for an easy score. They may look tired, but they’re definitely not playing that way.

Overtime is a battle. The Tigers try to keep pace with the Vipers, but it’s hard. Saddiq makes a pass that’s stolen, and Dunc has an easy shot blocked by Damian.
